Ultimate frisbee with HKUPA

What is Ultimate Frisbee?

Ultimate is a non-contact, self-refereed team sport played with a flying disc (or Frisbee™) that was started in the US in the 1970s and has since expanded globally. Many universities around the world -- especially in North America -- now have varsity teams, and in North America there are two professional men’s leagues too with games sometimes streamed on ESPN!

How do you play Ultimate Frisbee?

To play, two teams of seven players compete on a playing field about the same length as a football field, but narrower. At each end of the playing field is an end zone; each team defends one end zone and must work the disc up the field by throwing and catching it. Teams score a goal if one of their players catches the disc in the opposite end zone. To visualize how to play the sport, you can also watch this video:

When and where can I play Ultimate Frisbee?

In Hong Kong, we play regularly on weeknights, with 1 league in Spring and 1 in Autumn alongside our club teams’ competitive season. We also have various beach and grass tournaments that are held throughout the year, among which Hat Tournaments are suitable for anyone wanting to give the game a try. If you come out to play with us, be prepared to sweat a lot!

The best way to get involved is to go on our website at or our Facebook at and check our calendar to see when we organize pickup sessions (usually on a Sunday at 430 – 6pm) or to join one of our Ultimate 101 sessions which are our coaching workshops where you’ll get to learn and experience the basics of the game! We have information on where our fields are on the website, and you can also email us at for information.

Hope to see you out on the field!
